Dear Members,

I hope you and your families continue to navigate the aftermath of Irene successfully and can make time to enjoy the waning days of the boating season.  As the season winds down, I want to remind the membership of two upcoming events at the Club.

On Monday, September 12 we will hold a General Meeting at 8:00pm at the Piedmont Club.  The Nominating Committee will announce a new slate of officers for the 2012 season, so please make every effort to attend. We will also present an update on Irene related damage and restoration plans.

The Club’s annual Lobster Bake will take place on Saturday, September 17 from 6:00 – 10:00pm.  Last year’s event was attended by 230 people so please make your reservations early and enjoy what promises to be a night of great food, music and dancing!

Due to the significant structural damage that the Club’s main deck sustained during Irene’s tidal surge, we have made a decision to cancel the final picnic of the season.  The picnic was to take place on Sunday October 2.  If you are asking yourself why the Lobster Bake is on, while the picnic is cancelled, it is because the Lobster Bake takes place in the Pear Tree parking lot and all but the rest rooms will be roped off to Lobster Bake guests.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jim Baker and George Kelsey and the dock staff for another safe and successful season at the Darien Boat Club.  The milestone achievement of our first ever launch service was made possible by the cooperation and efforts of many, but particular thanks go to Rear Commodore Glen Osberg and Fleet Captain Jerry Kutz, for their many months of due diligence on the project, and of course to Jim, who ensured the launch’s safe and compliant operation.  In addition, progress on the pump out station and dock expansion would not have been possible without Art Morris’ guiding hand.

As my two year term as Commodore winds down, I’m mindful and appreciative of the many great volunteers that we have and I thank them for their selfless contributions to the operation of this unique and wonderful Boat Club.  To the general membership, I thank you for the privilege of serving.

Sincerely,

Chris Mangan
