Dear Members,
I sincerely hope you have
enjoyed your summer so far. The heat has arrived and I am sure you
are all getting use out of your boats and our facilities before the
kids head back to school. But, Summer 2016 is not over yet and
there is still great stuff happing at the club as we move into the
final couple of months of the season.
UPCOMMING EVENTS
Please plan to attend our next
General Meeting at The Piedmont Club on Wednesday
September 7th at 8 PM, we have quite a bit of
information to convey regarding the expansion, club infrastructure
updates and important votes.
Followed closely with our
Annual Lobster Bake on Saturday September 10th
from 6 – 10 PM. in the tent at Pear Tree Point, this is a great
event every year! It gives everyone a chance to spend some time
dancing, visiting and meeting fellow members under the tent. Great
food, great music, and a great party! This event is open to guests,
so if you have friends or neighbors who might enjoy the Darien Boat
Club, please invite them and be sure to introduce them to an
Executive Committee member.
On Sunday October 2nd
will be our Season End Picnic, if you have not attended one
of the picnics in the past this is a great opportunity to meet the
Executive Committee and enjoy some food with the family on a Sunday
afternoon at the club. For those that have attended previously, we
are looking forward to seeing you there again.
Our last event of the 2016
Season will be our Annual General Meeting on November 9th
at 8 PM. We will have light food, and refreshments available.
The main purpose of the evening will be the election of the 2017
officers. We will conduct a brief business meeting to wrap up the
year and give an update of what to expect for 2017.
UPDATES/ANNOUNCEMENTS
Many of you have noticed and
commented on the new deck layout and furniture. I would like to
thank the committee for their research and design to get us more
space for dining and a much improved layout. A special thanks to
Paul Johnson for all his efforts to acquire and assemble the
furniture. Many others participated, but Paul really went above and
beyond to make it all happen before the season got under way. For
those of you that haven’t been to the club in a while, please come
down and spend an evening on the deck, it is really a secret gem of
Darien.
I would like to welcome Mark
Cappelli to the Executive Committee. The launch service is now
three seasons old and continues to grow in use and efficiency thanks
to our Fleet Captain, Brian Lovegrove’s outstanding efforts.
However, the launch and the staff that runs it need dedicated
attention, so the Executive Committee decided to add a position to
focus exclusively on the Launch. This will allow Brian to focus
more on the massive job of managing the fleet. Mark is a competent
choice and I am sure will do an excellent job, we are very lucky to
have him.
I am also sad to announce the
departure of Paul Johnson as our Public Relations Chairman. Paul
has done a tremendous job publicizing the club and running events
such as the Open House and Boat Camp. He will be missed on the
Executive Committee and we wish him well. We will be backfilling
that position soon, and will probably have an announcement at the
September General Meeting.
As you have seen in the past
month or so, we are beginning to reduce the price of fuel and
carefully monitoring our existing supply. As many of you know, we
will be replacing our fuel storage tanks this winter. They have
been in the ground for coming up on 30 years and need to be
replaced. Currently the environmental laws allow us to put a new
tank back in the exact same spot where the existing tanks lay. We
will have a full report to the membership on this project and a vote
for the necessary financing at the September General Meeting.
Please come and learn about our infrastructure and the future it
holds for the club. I want to give a special thanks to Past
Commodore David Dever for all the tremendous efforts he has put into
this project. If it wasn’t for his efforts, we would never be as
far along as we are! Be sure to thank him if you see him at the
club.
At the September General Meeting
we will be presenting some recommended changes to the fee’s at the
club. Please come and hear the presentation from our Treasurer Tom
Lochtefeld and be prepared to vote on fee’s for upcoming years.
Enjoy the rest of the boating
season.
Jerry Kutz
